Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Athletic Trainer works under the supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer and supervises the care of student-athletes competing in Coppin State University’s athletic program. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of injuries within the University’s comprehensive sports medicine program.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
At a minimum, responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in daily operation of the athletic training facility.

  • Responsible for maintenance of medical inventory and cleanliness of the athletic training room in accordance with OSHA guidelines.

  • Provide coverage of practice and games (including some travel as needed) of assigned sports and assistance with conflict coverage.

  • Provide proper evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletically injured student-athletes and assist with referral to associated health care professionals when necessary.

  • Provide daily treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

  • Assists with annual pre-participation screenings.

  • Ensures proper use and maintenance of equipment and facilities.

  • Follows all developed policies and procedures.

  • Maintain medical records on student-athletes to include physical examinations and screenings, insurance information, and injury evaluation reports.

  • Assist with administering and coordinating correspondence for all insurance claims related to injuries occurring during intercollegiate athletic participation.

  • Assists with budget preparation and managing inventory of supplies for the athletic training facility.

  • Communicates with coaches regarding injured student-athlete participation.

  • Follows and adheres to the NATA Code of Ethics, University, MEAC and NCAA rules and regulation.

  • Remains current on all state and national requirements for license renewal.

  • Agrees to comply with all regulatory agency statuses, by-laws and mandates.

  • All other Duties as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer.

  • Provide primary sport coverage to Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Cross Country/Indoor/Outdoor Track and Field and Softball.

Required Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited CAATE program, (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education). Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or related field highly preferred.

  • Must be NATA Board Certified.

  • State of Maryland Licensed Athletic Trainer.

  • Current CPR/AED Certification.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum two years of experience as a certified athletic trainer at the Division I collegiate level.

  • Familiarity with NCAA and MEAC regulations regarding supplements and health and safety of student athletes.

  • Possess strong interpersonal skill and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse environment, including but not limited to student-athletes, coaches, administrative staff, and physicians.

  • Knowledge of athletic injuries, treatment methods, rehabilitation, record keeping, taping and bracing methods, emergency management, and experience with mental health management.

Preferred Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training.

  • Must possess organizational, technical and disciplinary skills to work with student athletes.

  • Ability to represent Coppin State University in a professional manner at all times.

  • Competence in both oral and written English to communicate in a clear and concise manner.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff and students.
