Job Description


The Assistant Controller is a senior level accounting position that supports the University Controller by managing accounting workflow and projects, and coordinating and supervising various accounting processes in the accounting department which include managerial oversight of accounting staff, general ledger maintenance and revenue and expense activity. The Assistant Controller will be involved in the preparation, review and coordination of monthly and quarterly reporting, annual audits, month-end and year-end closing and interim and annual Financial Statement preparation.


  • Provide support to University Controller as well as oversight and supervision of accounting department staff.

  • Maintain the account structure for general ledger accounts which includes set up of new general ledger accounts, department identification numbers and restricted project identification numbers.

  • Manage, prepare, supervise and review monthly reconciliation processes and procedures.

  • Ensure accounting procedures are consistent with GAAP, University System of Maryland and University internal control policy.

  • Serve as liaison for the financial accounting area and interacts with various campus departments and staff and relevant external agencies.

  • Assist Controller with developing and updating written accounting procedures and processes.

  • Manage process for month-end and year-end general ledger closing.

  • Assist in preparation of monthly, interim and year-end Financial Statements, reports and schedules.

  • Assist with preparation of schedules and information for various audits including year-end financial audits.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in Accounting is required.

  • CPA license and/or CPA candidate is a plus and highly preferred.

  • Advanced degree in business, finance or accounting is highly preferred.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of full-time professional experience in accounting or auditing with demonstrated technical competence in higher education accounting. Including a working knowledge of non-profit/governmental fund accounting.

  • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory or managerial experience with proven ability to plan and assign work according to the nature of the job to be performed and the capabilities of the staff, with a team oriented management style.

  • Experience using People Soft Financials highly preferred.

  • Higher education experience with demonstrated knowledge of issues, complexities and challenges of state university accounting, business practices and procedures.

  • R*STARS experience and working knowledge of State of Maryland accounting processes.

  • Excellent organizational skills assuring that all project timelines and report deadlines are met.

  • Ability to interpret, analyze, summarize, and present financial information.

  • Demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and accuracy with financial transactions.

  • Experience with application of GAAP.

  • Must have understanding of audit requirements placed on daily accounting functions.

  • Must have the ability to understand various privacy laws.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite and a variety of computer software packages.
